Thirty Days Of Gaming: Day twelve – A Game Everyone Should Play

Day Twelve of my Thirty Days Of Gaming, and it’s time for a recommendation. The challenge today is to write about a game I feel everybody should play. Evidently this would be a game that has been granted many GOTY (Game Of The Year) accolades, and also has a good fanbase. And it is.

The are many games that could fit the bill I just posted, which Is why I’m not just going to list one game in this article. I’m going to describe two games in this blog. They are Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Shadow Of The Colossus.

First up is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves exclusively on the Playstation 3, from powerhouse developer Naughty Dog. This action game features Nathan Drake, essentially the grown up love child of Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. As a treasure hunter, Drake is always looking for the next big score. Climbing, Spelunking and shooting his way through jungles and cities, Nathan has time to make snarky remarks.

The main reason why I believe every gamer worth his gamerscore should play Uncharted 2 is the sheer movie like quality of this game. The way this game plays the action is intensified very nicely and it always sputs you right in the thick of it. Some moments you’ll believe you’re watching a cut-scene, and wonder why Nathan isn’t moving. Only to realize that you’re in complete control and it’s up to you to jump out of the burning building on to the helicopter. This game is filled with these moments, which I believe is part en parcel to its winning of multiple game of the year accolades.

The second game I feel everybody should play, is one that I’ve mentioned before on this blog. Shadow Of The Colossus was among the highlights of the Playstation2’s extensive library of games. Colossus was the second title out of the instant-hit developer Team Ico. The game centers on the Wander. As he stumbles into a temple on his horse Agro we see the lifeless body of a woman on his lap. He puts this lady on an altar inside the temple and sets off on his quest. His goal is to topple sixteen giants that shamble around a forsaken world, in order to revive this woman; I’m going to assume this is his love interest.

The world of Colossus is immense, consisting out of forty or so regions that each cover over a square mile. This makes the world itself very large. Good thing you have your trusty steed Agro with you to help you traverse the world. One of the key elements that make this game so appealing to me is that there are no other enemies to deal with, other than the sixteen colossi. Giving the world in this game it’s desolate and forsaken feel.

So there we have it. Two games I think every gamer should have played in their time. Uncharted 2 and Shadow Of The Colossus.

Well, I’m 0 for 2 here…

I’ve heard a lot of recommendations for Uncharted 2. If I had a PS3 I would totally try it.

I do, however, own a PS2 but have never tried Shadow of the Colossus. I’ll keep an eye open on the used games sections when I visit the game store and maybe pick it up if I can!
