Thirty Days Of Gaming: Day Eighteen – Favorite Protagonists

Welcome to blog eighteen of the thirty days of gaming challenge. Today I’m going to talk about some of my favorite protagonists in video games. I’ve decided not to talk about my absolute favorites, for I think that’s impossible to gauge. I’m also not going to list all of my favorites, for they are too many. I’ve decided to list three of my favorites in this piece. So here they are in no particular order.

First up, it’s Ezio Auditore Da Firenze, from the Assassin’s Creed series. The main character in two of the Assassin’s Creed games, and he will return as the lead in the upcoming fourth title in the set. Ezio is an Italian noble from Florentine. During the course of Assassin’s Creed 2 and AC: Brotherhood we see Ezio develop his skills as an assassin and a ladies man. He also starts to amass quite a following of disciples that he trains in the ways of the assassins. Most importantly in this, is the creed of the assassins: To hide in plain sight, to not harm the innocent and to protect the brotherhood.

What makes Ezio a great character to me, is the fact that you see that he is tormented by what he has to do. Yet he ultimately knows that is it for the good of the many that the few need to be slain – a trademark saying for anybody that has seen Star Trek. He’s not a psychopath that goes out to murder anybody that he encounters. The creed of the assassins sees to that. He protects the innocent and delivers righteous justice to those that only seek power. Ezio is a hero in the truest sense.

My second pick for this entry is from the Final Fantasy universe. Specifically from Final Fantasy X. Yuna is the central character in the game as the story revolves around her pilgrimage to deliver the world from Sin. Sin is the literal embodiment of punishment for the sins of the populous. And her pilgrimage to become a High Summoner and in an act of sacrifice lay down her life so that others may experience the ‘Calm’ again; puts her on my short list.

Not only is Yuna the central figure that glues the entire party of characters you gather together. She also gains true power through the game as the visits Cloysters where she faces difficult trials in order to evoke the privilege of gaining the help of an Aeon – a powerful being that can be summoned by Yuna to aid in battle. Making her a formidable ally in battle.

The third and final character that will get a write-up on my blog is none other than the blue bomber, Mega man. For years and years the Mega Man platform games have been a staple of my favorites. With the advent of new downloadable entries in the classic format, my love for this character has not dwindled.

Mega man will always have a special place in my heart. More so than the likely more known Italian plumber that turns up at every party only to be red and loud. Mega man, while his name indicates otherwise, is always the underdog in his games. Starting with but a mere peashooter for a gun and having to overcome countless dangers while battling his way towards the boss at the end of the level. Only to then have to face the boss in a battle to the death. A never say die attitude to bring down the evil that Dr. Wiley keeps unleashing upon the world.

So there you have it. These are three of my favorite protagonists in video games. There would be more, but that would make this entry far too long. Let me known in the comments who some of your favorites are.
