Thirty Days Of Gaming: Day Twenty – Favorite Genre

Welcome to entry number twenty in my Thirty Days of Gaming series. Today’s blog is all about my favorite genre in video games. If you’ve read through my earlier posts it should not come as a shock to you that my favorite genre is Role Playing.
One could make an argument that every video game is in fact an act of role playing, because you the player are pretending (or role playing) as the character that is on the screen reacting to your inputs. I on the other hand am taking a more traditional approach and will not argue that point, today.

When I think of Role Playing Games, my mind goes to games like the Final Fantasy Series or the Elder Scrolls games. These are typically games that allow for a great deal of time to be sunk into them. Sometimes just to finish them, often times because they are filled with optional quests to lengthen their hours. That being said, I don’t think of online games like World of Warcraft. Even though it’s more than capable of sucking up hours of a gamer’s day. I’ve always been more inclined to play single player games, than I have been to play online multiplayer games.

The advent of the achievement has also had a big part in the increase of hours that I myself, but I’m sure many gamers, have put into playing RPGs. Putting in some extra effort to max out the level of your character, even after you’ve finished the game had become suddenly doubly rewarding. Not only do the side missions become easier, but usually this feat will unlock you an achievement or two along the way.

The last common denominator among many Role Playing Games is a large scale world and an engulfing story. Mostly the latter keeps me invested in longer games. More than having a huge open world to explore, this is probably why I will gravitate towards Final Fantasy before The Elder Scrolls. Probably right after finishing up the Final Fantasy game will I start on the Elder Scrolls one, though.

Please leave a comment below and tell me what your favorite genre of games is. If you feel particularly talky, tell me why as well. Thanks for reading.

Gotta agree about RPG’s…they are more to the heart of why most of us play – to disappear into a fantasy world and become someone else. Says the woman who’s played about 36 hours of Skyrim in a week…
