Thirty Days Of Gaming: Day Twenty Seven – Most Epic Scene Ever

2nd March, 2012 - Posted by Mashupman - No Comments

Wow this is so terribly hard. It’s also pretty much impossible to do this article without spoilers. So please be forewarned. This article will contain spoilers for the following games: Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 13, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Heavy Rain.

Today’s entry is by far the hardest one for me to write. Since there are so many great games these days; but also in years gone by already. I’m going to focus myself on the more recent games, as they have left the freshest impression on me as a gamer.

First up is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. During the campaign in the game a nuclear warhead strikes the city that you are flying over in your helicopter. The subsequent explosion and carnage sends you tumbling through the air as a ragdoll, and the aftermath of the explosion is nothing short of shocking.

Final Fantasy XIII made this entry for me. There is a scene in the game, near the end of the story line, where the heroes crash into a celebratory light-cycle race. Each character accompanied by their Eidolon summon creature, and the ensuing carnage is nothing short of spectacular. I’ve kept a saved game stashed away just before this moment, and have gone back to it. There is so much going on that multiple viewings will be needed to catch it all.

Even though you’ll be skipping over this after seeing it once and maybe showing it to a couple of friends, the animation for the Knights of the Round summon in Final Fantasy 7 is something to behold. It’s incredibly long. But the first time I saw it, I had to pick up my jaw from the floor. It made a lasting impression on me; much more so than the scene in which Sephiroth kills Aeris. All that managed to do was piss me off.

The last game I’m going to highlight right now is Heavy Rain. There are two things that set this game into a very special place in my heart. First off it’s the fact that there is a scene in which you as the main character, the father, butcher your own hand and cut off your pinky finger using wither a saw or a butcher’s knife. Talk about agonizing. Seeing and hearing Ethan writhe in pain simply cuts down to the bone. Yeah, that was a cheesy pun.

The second thing that made me burst out laughing was the fact that one of the characters had been used in the initial pitch for the game. The prostitute, Lauren, was the virtual actress that was featured in the first E3 video that was released for Heavy Rain. In which she attends a casting call and gets rudely shrugged aside for being too tall. The fact that she later makes an appearance in the game as a stripper, struck me as a sinister comment upon the world of Hollywood auditioning.

It turned out to become a rather lengthy entry today. I could go on and on about great games that have had memorable moments in them. But I’ve decided to limit myself to these four.Obviously I’m a dork for forgetting [InsertNameOfYourFavoriteGame] and the moment when [InsertEpicMomentHere] happens in it, but please don’t hold that against me. For one there is no way how I would know which games you are playing. And secondly, this is my blog and I’m going to write about things that I like on it. So that’s how it’s going to be.

If you still feel like I’m being a dork then by all means leave a comment below and tell me about some of your most epic moments in gaming.
