This blog is about one of my favorite things as a video game reviewer, sleeper hits. Having seen many video games tout their own horn on the cover and then failing to deliver their promises in game has taught me not to judge a game by its cover. Sooner or later you’ll run into a game that blows you away and that’s what today’s blog is all about.
Over the years I’ve had the privilege to get to play tons of games. Through all that time one game stands out, having truly blindsided me. The game in question is Britney’s Dance Beat. That’s right, a rhythm game featuring teen pop-idol Britney Spears. Being released on the Playstation 2, this game came out in 2002. It is also to this day is one of only two games that after picking up the controller for the first time; I had played for over eight hours straight.
What drew me into this game for so long a period was an unlockable reward in the form of 360-immersive concert videos. These videos were of performances at various concerts and let you spin the camera around and look at everything going on around you. I found this so fascinating that I couldn’t stop playing to unlock more of them as I played. And literally before I knew it, it was going on 2:30 AM and I had to struggle to keep my eyes open when I decided I would stop playing.
So far the only other game that has had this effect on me the first time I played it, was Evil Genius. A game that I played for nine hours straight; Even eating pizza one-handed behind the computer so I could keep on playing.
So that’s it for today. Please leave a comment below with some of your biggest sleep hit games.
