Gamerweblog.com is putting together a series of interviews with gaming ladies of all walks of life. In an effort to put the spotlight on what many still believe is a rarity, the girl who is an avid gamer. Today we highlight: Lindsay Elyse.
Hi Lindsay, first off all, thank you for taking the time out of your day to be part of this series.
Can you briefly explain what you do?
“What don’t I do! I’m currently involved in a media group with 5 of my best friends called XX (facebook.com/officialxxgirls). We cover conventions with interviews and general news and video, we cosplay, we game, we do reviews of games, comics and movies, all sorts of stuff! In addition to that, I model for 5 clothing companies, and write video game reviews for a magazine called Cosplay Shinkou! Some pretty exciting stuff is going to be happening this January, keep your eyes open! :D”
Does that leave you a great deal of time to play games?
“I make time!! Technically, gaming is my job since I have to play them in order to write my articles and reviews. If that means I lose sleep, then I lose sleep. I play on average 8 hours a day, more when I have the time!”
What is your go-to game for working off some stress?
“Any first-person shooter. I just want to virtually shoot everyone in the head haha that’s not weird… right? I’m currently obsessed with Halo 4 (OH MY GOD ITS SO GOOD) and that’s been my go-to game for stress, happiness, sadness, pretty much every emotion. I just really love that game.”
What are some of the other games that you enjoy playing?
“EVERYTHING! Halo 4 is my current obsession, Borderlands 1 & 2, Portal 2, Battlefield 3, Soul Calibur, the Devil May Cry series, the God of War series, the Assassin’s Creed series, Gears of War 3, World of Warcraft, Diablo 3, the Final Fantasy series, Skyrim, DOOM3, the BioShock series, Counter Strike, the Crysis series, Dead Space 2, Dragon Age, F.E.A.R., Left 4 Dead, the Mass Effect series, Prototype, Half Life, Team Fortress, Torchlight, Vindictus, I could seriously go on for an entire day about my favorite games.”
What is the main thing you look to get out of playing video games?(I.e. stress relieving, social contacts, acting out your inner psychopath?)
“Gaming is everything to me. I know that sounds pretty lame. It’s my job, my stress relief, my confidence boost, the cause of all my rage, the love of my life, all of that. It’s a social thing too! Most of my friends play video games, and I honestly have to TRY to talk to people who don’t game. On the off chance that my friends and I leave our computers and Xboxes, all we do when we see each other is talk about gaming. Last week, my group of friends and I hiked a local mountain one weekend, and I’m pretty sure all we did was reference gaming. Or quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail. You know, that stuff.”
As a cosplayer, what are some of the deciding factors in your choice for a specific character?
“Honestly, I really just need to love the character. One of my rules is that I don’t cosplay any character I’m not completely familiar with, like I wouldn’t cosplay a character from a video game I never played. That’s mostly because if someone sees me running around dressed as a blood elf from World of Warcraft, they’ll come up to me and ask me things like what server I’m on, what level I am, stuff like that, and I would hate to be like ohhhh, I don’t actually play… It’s definitely a way to get to know people!! You have an instant connection when the two of you play the same game.”
Do you have any favorite cosplays that you’ve done?
“Hmm. That’s hard! I think my black canary costume was my favorite. It was terribly uncomfortable, but I felt pretty awesome wearing it. As far as everyone else’s favorite cosplays? I think I’ve gotten the most love from my Blood Elf priest cosplay.”
Any game(s) that you are playing through at the moment?
“HALO. 4. Man. It’s so wonderful. I keep meaning to go back and play through the downloadable content in Borderlands 2, but I can’t get away from Halo… addiction is a bad thing.”
Do you get the chance to finish a lot of the games you play? Or do you have a list of unfinished games the length of your arm, like I have?
“Yes! When I write a review, I always make sure to finish the game first. I don’t think you get the entire feel of the game until you’ve finished it. But, I definitely have a list of games I haven’t finished. That’s not my fault though, it’s the gaming industry’s. Why would you release a big name game a week after another big name game. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO PLAY THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. I have to quit one in order to play the other in most cases, because I’m much too excited for the latter game to finish the first one. Rage.”
Do you have a favorite platform that you play games on? And can you explain why it is your favorite?
“PC. Definitely. I really have a think for the keyboard and mouse, especially in shooting games. It just so much more natural to play by moving my mouse than a stick on a controller I think. Plus, I just bought this INSANE gaming computer, one that I may or may not have spent all my school money on, and let me tell you, Skyrim on Ultra High Settings?! AHH. There’s nothing more gorgeous in the world. Nothing. You can try me. There’s nothing.”
To conclude the article, I’d like to use this set of ten questions that I have prepared to include in every interview. For this I have taken inspiration from Bernard Pigott and James Lipton (Inside The Actor’s Studio).
Here they are, the Trivial Ten!
1. What is your favorite word?
“No. Haha I know it’s lame, but I’m notorious to my friends for the sheer amount of times I say no.”
2. What is your least favorite word?
“Yes…. haha just kidding. I really dislike the word door. If you say it a whole bunch of times, it’s a really strange word. And look how it’s spelled. Door. It’s weird.”
3. What draws you into a game?
“GRAPHICS. GRAPHICS. GRAPHICS. Sure, gameplay is nice too, but when I see a trailer for a game and it looks like a real film, I just lose it. Honestly, have you seen the cinematics in Halo 4?! If we can do THAT, why can’t we cure cancer?”
4. What turns you off of a game?
“QUICKTIME EVENTS. OH MY GOD. God of War is one of my favorite series but I rage SO hard at all the quicktime events. Oh and timed events. Just let me play through on my own time, let me look at the game. I don’t want to have to run through it and have an anxiety attack because I can’t think fast enough.”
5. What game mechanic do you love?
“I’m a fan of puzzles and shooting things in the head.”
6. What game mechanic do you hate?
“Quicktime and timed, like I stated above. Also, in the roleplaying-game world, side quests. What’s the point? Just make the story quests longer.”
7. What is your favorite curse word?
“FUUUUCCCKKK. I mute my headset when I game online because I say it so much.”
8. What game that you’ve not played would you like to pick up?
“As much as I’m a Battlefield over Call of Duty fan, I’d like to try Black Ops 2. Maybe just rent it. We’ll see. Also, Hitman Absolution just came out and I haven’t had the time to pick it up.“
9. What games do you steer clear from?
“Sports games. I don’t understand them. If you want to play football… go outside?”
10. If you were to design a game, what would be the name of the main character?
“Percival Persimmons. Haha it makes me laugh.”
I would like to take this moment that thank you for answers. And would like to leave you some space for any final comments you may have for the readers. Is there anything in particular you want to share?
“Keep an eye out for XX! Great things are coming. Also people can like my official fanpage on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/LindsayElyseFanpage.”
