Gamerweblog.com is putting together a series of interviews with gaming ladies of all walks of life. In an effort to put the spotlight on what many still believe is a rarity, the girl who is an avid gamer. Today we highlight: Nicole who is better known as Smoldering Flame Cosplay.
Hi Niki, can you briefly explain what you do?
“Well, what I do, I consider myself rather normal. I go to Arizona State University and study art. I work in a theater helping with kids theater. But, I started cosplaying when I was 14 in 2004. Since then I’ve gotten more involved in the community. As for video games, well, I had an NES when I was growing and I loved it. I even loved playing horrible games like the Back to the Future game, that was such a horrible game…never did beat it haha. I was a Nintendo girl for a long time until my sister got her PS2, then, I became a Sony girl. Really, all consoles are fun to play on, but, I find my niche with the PS3.”
Cosplayers usually need to spend a lot of time on their costumes, do you get a lot of time to spend on playing games?
“I do spend a lot of time playing games. When I find I need some time alone, I love to play. I play games usually more then 20 hours a week on a good week. Thanks to 2011 and 2012 being such good years for games, I’ve probably been playing even more haha.”
When you do have a night to spare, what is your go-to game?
“When I just need something to play I pop in Borderlands 2, I love that game so much! I’ve beat it once already, but, I’m currently playing on Vault Hunter Mode. It’s something you can set down if you need to, and, it’s so funny it can make a bad day better.”
What are some of the other games that you enjoy playing?
“Well, my favorite series are Assassin’s Creed (playing through 3 right now), Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Uncharted. But, I’ve played all types of games that I’ve enjoyed.”
How does your cosplaying influence the games you play and how you play them? Do you tend to pay attention to the aesthetics of the game?
“Being a cosplayer and playing video games really do help. I remember when I saw the design for Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw, I knew I had to cosplay her. She was so cute, and, the game was really fun! It was so campy and ridiculous, it was amazing. But, that’s Suda51 for you haha. Being an art student, I do tend to pay attention to details when it comes to graphics. When you think about the beginning of the process and how it all had to be designed on paper first, it’s pretty amazing to think about.”
What’s do you find more important when picking a cosplay, the costume and attire or the character itself?
“When picking a character to cosplay, I usually go off of their character. I pick characters I love, ones that I played or read or saw, that I could identify with, or that I wanted to be like. But, at the same time, I do like to see the design and if it’s something appealing, it makes it even better.”
Are you working on a particular costume right now?
“Right now I’m working on Mad Moxxi from Borderlands 2, a female version of Ezio Auditore from Assassin’s Creed II, and a racer version of Mari from Evangelion.”
Any game(s) coming out soon that have you excited? What about them pulls you toward them?
“I am very very very excited for Metal Gear Revengence and I’m also looking forward to Bioshock Infinite.”
Do you have a favorite platform that you play games on? And can you explain why it is your favorite?
“I really enjoy playing on the PS3, I am use to the controls, and the graphics are very crisp. Plus, the exclusives like Uncharted, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid 4 are not ones to pass up.”
To conclude the article, I’d like to use this set of ten questions that I have prepared to include in every interview. For this I have taken inspiration from Bernard Pigott and James Lipton (Inside The Actor’s Studio).
Here they are, the Trivial Ten!

3. What draws you into a game?
“What does draw me into a game is a story and characters, just like in a good book or movie.”
4. What turns you off of a game?

“If I could design a came, my main character would be Max Power, because…that was Homer Simpson’s first choice when he could pick a new name for himself haha.”
