Gamerweblog.com is putting together a series of interviews with gaming ladies of all walks of life. In an effort to put the spotlight on what many still believe is a rarity, the girl who is an avid gamer. Today we highlight: Kate McC, who is known better as Katybear.
Hi Katy, first off, thank you for taking the time out of your day to be part of this series.
“Thank you for interviewing me.”
Can you briefly explain what you do?
“I cosplay. I really love dressing up as characters that I like. Especially video game characters. I make my costumes as well, which is why you don’t see one every other week, it takes time for me to get the materials and make them.“
Does that leave you a great deal of time to play games?
“Unfortunately I’ve has less and less time to play games, which sucks. I have recently slowed down on making cosplay to try and play some. I do have a few new costumes that I am working on right now.“
What are some of the games that you’re playing at the moment?
“Right now I am playing Pokemon Black 2.”
Perhaps one of your more known cosplays is as a female Smoke from Mortal Kombat. What about the character compelled you to pick them over the other characters?
“I have always played as Smoke when I play Mortal Kombat, he’s my favorite character. I wanted to do something different that no one would think of, since I have seen a few female versions of MK characters from others which I find flattering :D”
Do you feel that taking a male character and doing a gender-bending cosplay is more exciting than picking a female character to play?
“I think it’s different, and I like different.”
What are some of your favorite characters that you’d like to work into your cosplay arsenal?
“I really like Samus, and also World of Warcraft, particularly the blood elves.”
What does a character have to have in order for you to be willing to invest the time to create the costume?
“It has to be a character that I already like, I don’t make a cosplay just because I like the way it looks, I do it because I already liked the character.”
Back to games a little bit.
Is there a genre of games or an element that is common among the games you like to play?
“I really like fighting games, and RPG’s.”
What are some of the upcoming games that have you excited?
“I am excited for Luigi’s Mansion coming out for the 3DS, I love the original.”
Do you have a favorite platform that you play games on? And can you explain why it is your favorite?
“I really like my X-box the most, it has the most games that I like to play and I also have my Netflix, I am also a fan of Nintendo too.”
To conclude the article, I’d like to use this set of ten questions that I have prepared to include in every interview. For this I have taken inspiration from Bernard Pigott and James Lipton (Inside The Actor’s Studio).
Here they are, the Trivial Ten!
1. What is your favorite word?
2. What is your least favorite word?
3. What draws you into a game?
4. What turns you off of a game?
5. What game mechanic do you love?
6. What game mechanic do you hate?
“The voice recognition of the Kinect when it randomly thinks I say something during a movie and it pauses for no reason!”
7. What is your favorite curse word?
8. What game that you’ve not played would you like to pick up?
“League of Legends”
9. What games do you steer clear from?
“First person shooters because I SUUUUCK at them.”
10. If you were to design a game, what would be the name of the main character?
I would like to take this moment that thank you for answers. And would like to leave you some space for any final comments you may have for the readers. Is there anything in particular you want to share?
“I just want to thank you for taking the time to interview me. Please share a link to my page where everyone can check out my cosplay: https://www.facebook.com/katybear1031”
