Gamerweblog.com is putting together a series of interviews with gaming ladies of all walks of life. In an effort to put the spotlight on what many still believe is a rarity, the girl who is an avid gamer. Today we highlight: Bethany L. Maddock.
Hi Bethany, can you briefly explain what you do?
“I am a Graphic Designer at an online retailer.”
Does that leave you a great deal of time to play games?
“Not as much time as I’d like! It’s a 9 to 5 job and I don’t live very close to where I work which means I only have about 4 hours during week nights to get as much gaming in as I can in between exercising and cosplay work.”
When you have a night to spare, what is your go-to game?
“I tend to beg my friends to play Mortal Kombat with me a lot if they’re online.”
What are some of the other games that you’re playing at the moment?
“I’m actually bouncing between the first Assassins Creed (I’m so late to the series, I know!) and The Walking Dead game.”
Do you feel that being a cosplayer changes the way you play games? Do you have more of an eye for the character designs because of it?
“Maybe a little! I’ve always had an attraction to character design, even before I started cosplaying. It was one of the “things I wanted to be when I grew up” but unfortunately I lack illustration talent to really cut it as a character designer… but design is very important to me (hence why I went to art school and became a graphic designer).”
What are some of your favorite characters to cosplay and why do you feel they resonate so strongly with you?
“Strong independent females have always been my favorite. Catwoman (DC Comics), Sheik (Zelda: Ocarina of Time), Juliet Starling (Lollipop Chainsaw)…they all kick some serious booty and don’t need anyone else to help them be who they are. (Ok. Maybe Juliet needs Nick… but she’s still pretty independent considering… his whole not having a body thing!)”
Can you say anything about a new design that you are working on?
“Actually I’m planning on doing something very different for me (as far as characters go). I’ll be cosplaying the Harvest Goddess from the Harvest Moon video game series. I’m kind of nervous about it. In many of the games she’s exists only as an easter egg… so we’ll see if anyone will recognize me. (I really hope there are some other Harvest Moon fans out there!) I also have a group cosplay planned, from the new game by Neatherrealm Studios, Injustice: Gods Among Us. I’ll be Catwoman alongside the very talented Marie Grey as Wonder Woman, and Destiny Nickelson as Harley Quinn. That will be something to look out for! These ladies are amazing! I’m so lucky they agreed to cosplay with me!”
Back to games a little
What was the last game that you finished?
“That’s a tough question only because I can’t exactly remember! I have a ton of games I’m almost finished with but I just haven’t beaten that final boss… I jump around a lot when I game, unless I absolutely fall in love with it. I think the last game I actually played through and really beat might be Lollipop Chainsaw from over the summer!”
Any upcoming games that you are looking forward to?
“Oh yeah! Injustice is going to be amazing! I played it at New York Comic Con (twice actually, I had to go back for a second time it was that good… and I had to show Neatherrealm my Fem Scorpion costume too!) Bioshock Infinite is going to blow minds. The game was made right by where I live (Yay! local gaming companies!).”
Do you have a favorite platform that you play games on? And can you explain why it is your favorite?
“I mostly play on my PS3 right now, but I’m always picking up old systems as well to play the games I grew up with, like the Sega Genesis, N64, PS2, and even my Gameboy color. (Still can’t believe we used to play games on screens with no backlight!)”
To conclude the article, I’d like to use this set of ten questions that I have prepared to include in every interview. For this I have taken inspiration from Bernard Pigott and James Lipton (Inside The Actor’s Studio).
Here they are, the Trivial Ten!
1. What is your favorite word?
“Feels (as in, I have all these feels)”
2. What is your least favorite word?
3. What draws you into a game?
“Any game that has emotion behind it.”
4. What turns you off of a game?
“I tend to stray away from games that don’t have much of a storyline. I need to get attached to something in order to stay interested.”
5. What game mechanic do you love?
“I play mostly RPGs but I also hold a special place in my heart for rhythm games (Dance Dance Revolution, Bust a Groove, Space Channel 5)”
6. What game mechanic do you hate?
“I might offend some people with this answer but I dislike turn based RPGs like Final Fantasy. I just can’t get into it for some reason.
7. What is your favorite curse word?
“For lack of a more creative word, I guess I’ll go with Fuck!”
8. What game that you’ve not played would you like to pick up?
“I am a huge Zelda fan, but I still haven’t played Skyward Sword! I really need to play it but I have to dust off my Wii first.”
9. What games do you steer clear from?
“Although I am a sports fan, I can’t stand sports video games… unless we’re talking about racing… but Madden? No thanks!”
10. If you were to design a game, what would be the name of the main character?
“First name that popped into my head: FEFFENDOR LORD OF THE AWESOME! (Always spelled in all caps)”
I would like to take this moment that thank you for answers. And would like to leave you some space for any final comments you may have for the readers. Is there anything in particular you want to share?
“Thanks so much for asking me to do the interview! Sorry it took so long, but I’m a HUGE video game nerd so I really enjoyed filling this out!”
