Gamerweblog.com is putting together a series of interviews with gaming ladies of all walks of life. In an effort to put the spotlight on what many still believe is a rarity, the girl who is an avid gamer. Today we highlight: Mad Mel Madigan.
Hi Mel, what I wanted to do is put the spotlight on as many great Ladies of Gaming as I could gather. And in that regard I couldn’t pass you by.
“Well thank you so much for having me!”
Can you briefly explain what you do?
“I am a cosplay model. I make cosplays, do photoshoots, fan films, promotions, go to conventions and things like that.”
Does that leave you a great deal of time to play games?
“Not really no. lol I haven’t been able to get into a game in a really long time…actually, last time I was really involved in a game was Diablo 3. That doesn’t stop me from having a list of games on my “to play” list though…if I ever get some free time lol.”
What was the first video game you ever played?
“Mario! and duck hunt. they were on the same cartridge :)”
Do you get gamer rage?
What was the last time it happened?
“Actually, the last BIG time it happened, I got really excited because my boyfriend brought out his SNES and he had Donkey Kong Country on it. So, I decided to relive my childhood and play it. and I got SUPER into it and there was this one level that ever since I was a kid it took me FOREVER to beat and I FINALLY beat it and I swear to you as soon as I did, my puppy ran into the machine by accident and it turned off before I could save it. It was one of those moments where you just stare at the screen for a little bit deciding whether you should cry and scream.”
As a cosplayer, do you find that you’re paying more attention to character designs? Perhaps looking for future cosplays?
“Definitely. Actually, it starts when I see the trailers for the games and grows when I’m actually playing it. And I do it without even thinking about it most of the time. I find myself thinking ‘oh I could make that out of craft foam…that actually just looks like a tshirt and I could paint that symbol on it…I have those boots already’ and then I catch myself and think ‘am i ever going to play a game just to play the game again?’ lol. I don’t really mind it though. Cosplay is a major passion of mine and tends to come up in every day life more than you’d think.”
Out of the costumes you’ve put on, which was the most fun to wear and which was the most fun to make?
“I just recently put together what I call ‘party Harley’ which is my fun little version of Harley Quinn. I get to be really bouncy and fun and loud when I wear her and its just super fun to see how much everyone really enjoys it. I think the most fun to have made would have to be my spidey bikini (which i have yet to wear) because I had always wanted a spiderman bikini and no one had made an affordable one and I finally put it together on my own and it came out better than I could have imagined.”
If resources weren’t an option, what would be your ultimate cosplay to do?
“Claire from the series Claymore or Erza’s Heaven’s Wheel armor from Fairy Tail.”
Can you lift the veil on some of the costumes you’re working for upcoming events?
“I like to keep my costumes secret till at least a few weeks before the actual conventions. I can tell you they’re all either going to be mash ups or based off of some really cool fan art i’ve been running into. And most of them are group cosplays with my fellow geeky girls :).”
Okay, back to games again.
What was the last game that you’ve finished?
“I’ve beat Fable 2 like…12 times now. It’s the game that invokes the least gamer rage from me. Other than that I am about 90% done with I think 5 different games and just haven’t gone back to finish them.”
Do you like to finish a game before you move to the next? Or are you like and have you amassed a stack of games that you ‘will get back to’?
“…well I think I answered that one already by accident. Lol.”
What are some of the games you’re playing at the moment?
“I’m in the middle of Alice Madness Returns. Looking to get more into Sleeping Dogs. Haven’t Beaten Arkham City yet and I really need to do that before Arkham Origins comes out.”
Any upcoming games you’re excited about?
“GTA because I have this secret obsession with games that let me fuck shit up…lol and I’m really excited about Wild Star because they have a race thats basically rabbit people with purple hair and …well…I would really like to cosplay that. Lol.”
Do you have a favorite platform that you play games on? And can you explain why it is your favorite?
“I used to prefer the Xbox because I just liked the selection better but I’m leaning more towards pc games just because I am forever on my computer and I’m just more comfy here now. Lol.”
To conclude the article, I’d like to use this set of ten questions that I have prepared to include in every interview. For this I have taken inspiration from Bernard Pigott and James Lipton (Inside The Actor’s Studio).
Here they are, the Trivial Ten!
